Il y a un an, je vous avais proposé une interview de M. W. Kelly, un auteur de science-fiction américain, et je pensais depuis à réaliser de nouvelles interviews sur le blog. J’ai à cœur de vous présenter à la fois des points de vue anglo-saxons et francophones pour aborder les manières de procéder, différentes ou non, dans chaque pays. Ce mois-ci, je suis donc ravie d’interviewer Justine Savy, une jeune autrice qui avait participé à mes ateliers d’écriture créative pour ados il y a deux ans, maintenant en licence “Lettres – Parcours Écritures”, et qui publiera bientôt son nouveau roman, Hemophelia. Elle vous parle aussi d’écriture sur les réseaux sociaux : Instagram, YouTube, mais également dans son nouveau podcast, Aujourd’hui j’écris, que je vous recommande vivement !

1)   Bonjour Justine, je suis ravie de te recevoir sur le blog ! Pour commencer, peux-tu présenter rapidement tes deux romans : S’en Souvenir, publié en 2017 et Hemophelia dont la publication est prévue prochainement ?

Bonjour Alicia, c’est un véritable plaisir !

S’en Souvenir est un roman que j’ai écrit à 17 ans. Il raconte l’histoire d’une jeune fille, Elizabeth, qui rêve de devenir danseuse et va se réveiller un matin à 33 ans, mariée, serveuse dans un café et maman, sans aucun souvenir de ce qu’il s’est passé ces dix-huit dernières années. J’étais très jeune et c’était ma première expérience dans l’autoédition donc… il reste énormément d’imperfections. Raison pour laquelle le roman n’est plus disponible aujourd’hui.

Pour Hemophelia, je ne vais pas en dire trop, mais c’est l’histoire de deux amis et voisins qui vont partir sur les routes de l’Hérault. C’est une romance feel-good entre autres choses .

2)   D’où t’es venue l’inspiration pour ton dernier roman, Hemophelia ?

C’était en 2015 (ça remonte !). J’étais sur une plage de Corse et je ramassais des galets et Elia, mon héroïne s’est imposée à moi. L’histoire s’est construite autour d’elle, petit à petit.

3)   Tu as écrit et publié ton premier roman alors que tu étais encore au lycée. Comment as-tu réussi à trouver le temps d’écrire et de gérer tout ce qui tourne autour de la publication ? Est-il plus ou moins facile d’écrire maintenant que tu es étudiante ?

Je vais avouer que je ne travaillais pas beaucoup au lycée. J’ai toujours eu des facilités et avec elles, une grande « flemme » de travailler. Ça ne servait à rien, puisque j’y arrivais… Donc je préférais consacrer mon temps à l’écriture. J’ai écrit S’en Souvenir en un mois, et j’en ai mis dix à le publier. Je m’y mettais le soir en rentrant de cours et le week-end dès que je pouvais.

Aujourd’hui, je dirais que pour écrire, il faut que je le décide. Je suis une accro du travail et avec la création de mon entreprise en début d’année, mes cours et mon emploi étudiant, si je ne me réserve pas un temps pour écrire, je n’écris pas. Donc parfois, je fais l’égoïste et je réserve un créneau pour l’écriture comme je le ferais pour un rendez-vous important. Et si je n’ai pas d’inspiration, je prends mon carnet et je prends des notes.

4)   Quelle est pour toi la partie la plus facile / la plus difficile dans le processus d’écriture et de correction d’un roman ?

La partie la plus facile pour moi et celle que je préfère, c’est la phase de planification. J’adore passer du temps à découvrir mon histoire, mes personnages et à planifier les chapitres les uns après les autres. Par contre, le plus difficile pour moi bizarrement, c’est le début : je mets toujours des mois à poser les premiers mots de mon récit. Pour Hemophelia par exemple, j’ai réécrit le premier chapitre pas moins de dix fois avant d’avoir un début qui me convenait !

5)   Tu as choisi d’autoéditer tes deux romans. Pourquoi avoir fait ce choix ?

Pour S’en Souvenir, c’était surtout par curiosité : j’adore apprendre comment fonctionnent les choses et j’avais besoin de le faire pour mon premier roman. Avec le temps, j’ai découvert que j’étais une personne très indépendante et qui a besoin de tout contrôler sur son roman ; l’idée qu’une maison d’édition puisse gérer des étapes cruciales de la publication de mon livre m’insupporte. J’ai beaucoup trop envie de tout faire pour partager ce travail à d’autres personnes (sauf pour la phase de correction / bêta-lecture où je travaille en groupe). Par ailleurs, toutes les polémiques autour de #PayeTonAuteur et les problèmes de rémunérations autour de cette profession m’ont pas mal refroidie : je préfère gérer mon business, créer à ma manière et ne pas dépendre d’une autre entreprise que la mienne.

6)   Peux-tu nous expliquer un peu le processus d’autoédition d’un roman ? Pourquoi avoir choisi la plateforme TheBookEdition pour ton premier roman ? Vas-tu la réutiliser pour Hemophelia ?

Il faut savoir que pour S’en Souvenir, j’ai fait un peu n’importe quoi. Je pense que la première étape pour autoéditer un roman (si on passe toute la phase d’écriture), c’est d’ouvrir son auto-entreprise puisqu’on va générer des revenus qu’il faudra déclarer. On a donc le statut d’auto-entrepreneur.e. A partir de là, il faut non seulement faire tout ce qu’une maison d’édition ferait pour nous (correction, mise en page, couverture, etc.) en passant par des prestataires ou non, se procurer ses numéros ISBN (le numéro sur le code-barre du livre), envoyer son roman à différents comités (dont la BNF) et gérer toute la promotion de son roman ensuite.

À l’époque, j’ai choisi de passer par The Book Edition car je ne connaissais que cette plateforme et n’en avais entendu que du bien – et en effet, l’équipe est géniale et je les recommande vivement. Pour la suite, je compte passer uniquement par un imprimeur et tout gérer moi-même (toujours ce besoin de tout faire haha). Donc mettre en vente mon roman que ce soit en version papier ou numérique sur ma boutique et ne pas passer par une plateforme d’autoédition qui forcément limite les choix au niveau de la qualité du papier, de la couverture, etc. Je préfère aller travailler directement auprès d’imprimeurs pour façonner mon roman tel que je l’imagine.

7)   Travailles-tu sur d’autres projets ?

Le mot « projet » fait beaucoup trop partie de mon vocabulaire… Sans mentir, je pense avoir plus d’une vingtaine de projets pour les années à venir. Je travaille sur le premier jet d’un nouveau roman, mais j’ai déjà ma liste de parution qui est pleine jusqu’à 2025 ! Et il n’y a pas que des projets de romans, mais ça… c’est encore secret .

8)   Quel conseil donnerais-tu à quelqu’un qui a envie d’écrire mais qui ne s’est pas encore lancé ?

De se lancer, d’essayer et de ne pas avoir peur d’échouer (et c’est une perfectionniste qui le dit !). Je trouve qu’on se pose toujours beaucoup trop de questions avant de commencer quelque chose de nouveau : est-ce que ça va me plaire ? est-ce que je vais réussir ? comment on fait ? La meilleure option reste d’essayer, de tester. Je vois un peu ça comme les plats de ma maman que j’essaie de reproduire : je n’ai pas la recette exacte, alors je balance des ingrédients dans la marmite, je mets quelques épices et je goûte. Si ce n’est pas bon, je retiens et je réessaie. Et si je n’y arrive vraiment pas, je cherche de l’aide, une recette, de nouveaux ingrédients. L’écriture, c’est pareil d’après moi.

9)   Où peut-on te retrouver / retrouver le roman que tu as déjà publié sur Internet et les réseaux sociaux ?

Comme je l’ai dit, le roman n’est plus disponible. On peut me retrouver principalement sur Instagram sous le pseudo @justinesavyauteure, mais aussi sur Spotify avec mon podcast Aujourd’hui j’écris, sur YouTube (toujours Justine Savy Auteure) et bientôt sur mon site internet : www.justine-savy.com.

A year ago, I published an interview with M. W. Kelly, an American Sci Fi author, and since then I’ve been thinking I should publish more interviews on the blog. I want you to be able to discover the points of views of English-speaking and French-speaking authors so that you can see how they write and publish their books in each country, whether they do it the same way or not. This month, I’m very excited to interview Justine Savy, a young French author who attended my teen creative writing workshops two years ago, and who now studies creative writing. Her new book will be released soon. You can find her on social media (French only): Instagram, YouTube, but also her new podcast, Aujourd’hui j’écris, that I highly recommend.

And without further ado, here is the interview (translated from French into English).

1)   Hi Justine, I’m very excited to interview you on the blog! First, can you tell us a bit more about your two novels: S’en Souvenir, published in 2017, and Hemophelia, which will be released soon?

Hi Alicia, it’s a pleasure!

S’en Souvenir is a novel I wrote when I was 17. It tells the story of a young girl, Elizabeth, who dreams of becoming a dancer and wakes up one morning when she’s 33, married, a waitress in a coffee shop and a mother, without remembering at all what happened over the past eighteen years. I was very young and I was self-publishing for the first time so… there are still a lot of imperfections. That’s the reason why this novel isn’t available anymore.

Regarding Hemophelia, I don’t want to say too much, but it’s the story of two friends and neighbors who go on a road trip in the Herault region*. It’s a feel-good romance, among other things .

*In the South of France.

2)   What inspired you to write your latest novel, Hemophelia?

It was in 2015 (it’s been a long time!). I was on a beach in Corsica and I was collecting pebbles, and Elia, the protagonist, came to me. The story was built around her, little by little.

3)   You wrote and published your first book when you were still in high school. How did you manage to find the time to write and deal with all the publishing-related tasks? Do you think it’s easier or harder to write now that you’re a university student?

I have to admit I wasn’t working a lot when I was in high school. I’ve always been a quick learner and so I was too lazy to work. It wasn’t necessary, since I managed without it… So I preferred to spend my time writing. I wrote S’en Souvenir in a month, and it took me ten months to publish it. I worked on it in the evenings when I came home from school, and on weekends, whenever I could.

Nowadays, I’d say that in order to write, I have to make the decision. I’m a workaholic, and since I started my business at the beginning of the year and I’m busy with my schoolwork and my job, if I don’t set aside some time to write, I don’t write. So sometimes, I’m selfish and I set aside some time to write as if I were making an important appointment. And if I’m not inspired, I take my notebook and I jot down notes.

4)   What’s the easiest/hardest part of the writing and revision process for you?

For me, the easiest part, and my favorite, is the outlining stage. I love spending time discovering my story, my characters, and outlining the chapters one after the other. Oddly enough, for me the hardest part is the beginning: it always takes months for me to write down the first words of my story. For Hemophelia for instance, I rewrote the first chapter no less than ten times before I found a beginning I liked!

5)   You chose to self-publish both of your novels. Why did you make this decision?

For S’en Souvenir, it was out of curiosity: I love learning how things work and I needed to do it for my first novel. With time, I realized I’m a very independent person and I need to control everything regarding my novel; I hate the idea that a publishing house could handle crucial steps in the publishing process of my book. I want to do everything too much to share the work with other people (except for the revision/beta reading steps, then I do work with other people). Moreover, the argument around #PayeTonAuteur* and the payment issues for writers put a damper on my enthusiasm: I prefer to run my business, be free to create and depend on no other company.

*#PayeTonAuteur (which means “pay your author”) is a French movement created when the French book fair Livre Paris said they wouldn’t pay the authors who participated. The French authors argued that even the plants purchased to ornate the fair were worth spending money, but the organizers wouldn’t pay the authors who wrote the books they sold.

6)   Can you tell us about the self-publishing process? Why did you choose TheBookEdition to publish your first novel? Are you going to use this website again for Hemophelia?

For S’en Souvenir, I didn’t know what I was doing. I think the first step in the self-publishing process (without taking the writing process into account), is to start a micro-enterprise since you’re going to generate income that you’ll have to report. So you’re an entrepreneur. Then you have to do everything a publishing house would do for you (book editing, formatting, cover, and so on) and decide to hire service providers or not, get ISBN numbers (the number visible in the barcode on the book), send your book to various committees (including the BNF*), and then promote your book.

At the time, I chose TheBookEdition because I only knew this platform and I’d heard only good things about it—and indeed, the team is great and I highly recommend it. Now I’ve decided to only choose a printer and to handle everything myself (always the need to do everything haha). So I’ll sell my book as a physical book and an ebook in my online shop instead of finding a self-publishing company that will inevitably limit my choices regarding the quality of the paper, the cover, and so on. I prefer to work directly with a printer to create the novel I’ve imagined.

7)   Are you working on other projects?

The word “project” is a big part of my vocabulary…. To be honest, I think I’ll be working on more than twenty projects in the years to come. I’m working on the first draft of my new book, but my release calendar is full until 2025! And my projects don’t include only novels, but that… that’s still a secret .

8)   What advice would you give to someone who wants to write but hasn’t started to write yet?

Start, try and don’t be afraid to fail (and that’s a perfectionist telling you to do that!). I think we always have too many questions before we start something new: am I going to like it? Am I going to succeed? How should I do? The best option is to try. The way I see it, it’s a bit like my mom’s recipes that I’m trying to mimic: I don’t have the exact recipe, so I throw ingredients into the cooking pot, I add some spices and I sample it. If it’s not good, I remember it and I try again. And if I don’t manage to do it at all, I find help, a recipe or new ingredients. In my opinion, writing works the same way.
